Stop the Storage Pool.

In QuantaStor, the "Offline/Stop Storage Pool" feature is used to deactivate and stop a storage pool, temporarily taking it offline and preventing access to its storage resources. When a storage pool is offline or stopped, clients and applications cannot utilize the storage capacity provided by the pool.

Storage pools can be stopped to do maintenance operations and are stopped automatically when you shutdown your storage system. Stopping a storage pool also sends a signal to any hardware RAID controllers to flush any active write cache to disk. Once a storage pool has been stopped you will not be able to access volumes and shares in the pool until the pool has been restarted.

WARNING: Active sessions with volumes in the selected pool will be dropped as a result of taking the pool offline.

The purpose of the "Offline/Stop Storage Pool" function is to perform maintenance, troubleshooting, or configuration changes on the storage pool without disrupting client access or risking data integrity. When a storage pool is taken offline, the following actions typically occur:

  • Client access suspension: The storage pool stops accepting read and write requests from clients or applications. This prevents any changes or access to the data stored within the pool while it is offline.
  • Synchronization or rebuilding pausing: If the storage pool utilizes data redundancy mechanisms such as RAID, the synchronization or rebuilding processes may be paused temporarily. This ensures that the pool remains in a consistent state when brought back online.
  • Resource release: The system releases the resources occupied by the storage pool, such as cache memory, network connections, and processing power. This allows those resources to be utilized by other active storage pools or processes within the QuantaStor environment.
  • Configuration lock: Modifications to the storage pool's configuration are typically restricted while it is offline. This prevents accidental changes or conflicts during maintenance or troubleshooting activities.

The purpose of the "Offline/Stop Storage Pool" feature is to provide administrators with a controlled way to halt access to a storage pool temporarily. This allows for tasks such as firmware upgrades, disk replacements, or reconfiguration without affecting client availability or risking data integrity. Once the necessary maintenance or changes are completed, the storage pool can be brought back online, allowing clients to resume utilizing its storage resources.
