Snapshot a storage volume.

In QuantaStor, the "Snapshot Storage Volume" feature allows users to create point-in-time copies of storage volumes. These snapshots capture the state of a volume at a specific moment and serve as a read-only copy for data protection, data recovery, and other purposes.

The purpose of the Snapshot Storage Volume feature in QuantaStor is to provide users with a mechanism for data protection, data retention, and efficient recovery. Here are some key aspects of its purpose:

  • Data Protection: Snapshots act as a safeguard against accidental deletion, data corruption, or other unforeseen issues. By creating snapshots of storage volumes, users can capture a copy of the data at a particular point in time. This allows for easy recovery if the original data is lost or becomes compromised.
  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO): Snapshots play a crucial role in meeting the RPO requirements of an organization. By taking regular snapshots, users can minimize data loss by restoring volumes to a specific point in time, effectively reducing the potential impact of data loss incidents.
  • Fast Recovery: Snapshots provide a quick and efficient means of restoring data. Instead of restoring from backups, which can be a time-consuming process, users can utilize snapshots to revert storage volumes to a known, consistent state. This reduces downtime and improves overall system availability.
  • Data Retention and Rollback: Snapshots can serve as long-term data retention mechanisms. They enable users to retain historical versions of data for compliance purposes, auditing, or simply for reference. Additionally, snapshots can be used to roll back volumes to previous states if needed, such as undoing changes or reverting to a stable configuration.
  • Space Efficiency: QuantaStor employs copy-on-write (CoW) technology for snapshots, which optimizes storage space utilization. Rather than creating full copies of data for each snapshot, QuantaStor only stores the changes made since the previous snapshot, resulting in efficient use of storage resources.

Overall, the purpose of the Snapshot Storage Volume feature in QuantaStor is to provide users with a powerful tool for data protection, recovery, and efficient storage management. It allows for the creation of point-in-time copies of storage volumes, which can be utilized for various purposes, including data protection, recovery, retention, and rollback operations.

Navigation: Storage Management --> Storage Volumes --> Storage Volume --> Snapshot (toolbar)

Volume Name

The snapshot name should contain text and or numeric characters. It should not contain spaces or special characters.
If you do not provide a name for Name (optional) a default name with a suffix of _snap will be provided.

Storage Cloud Quotas

The Use Quota option refers to storage cloud quotas. This is an aspect of the multi-tenancy features of QuantaStor.

Snapshot Count

Snapshot Count is used to create multiple copies for batch scenarios.
