Create storage volumes that directly map one-to-one to physical media with no Storage Pool in between.

The "Create Pass-thru Storage Volume(s)" feature in QuantaStor serves the purpose of creating storage volumes that directly map one-to-one to physical media with no Storage Pool in between. This feature is typically used for tiered architectures and for converting NVMe and SATA devices into iSCSI/FC logical devices that support IO fencing via SCSI3-PR or when you want to utilize individual drives as standalone storage volumes without configuring them into a RAID array.

Key purposes and benefits of the "Create Pass-thru Storage Volume(s)" feature:

  • Direct Drive Access: Pass-thru storage volumes allow direct access to individual drives without any abstraction layer or data redundancy. Each storage volume corresponds to a single physical drive, enabling direct and independent access to the drive's capacity.
  • Flexibility: By creating pass-thru storage volumes, you have the flexibility to utilize individual drives for specific purposes or scenarios. This can be useful when you want to segregate data, use specific drives for certain workloads, or have different configurations for different drives.
  • Performance Optimization: Pass-thru storage volumes bypass the overhead associated with RAID configurations, potentially leading to improved read and write performance. Since the drives are accessed directly without any RAID calculations or parity calculations, the performance of pass-thru volumes may be more suitable for certain high-performance workloads.
  • Simplified Management: The "Create Pass-thru Storage Volume(s)" feature provides a simplified interface to configure and manage individual drives as storage volumes. You can easily select the desired drive(s) and create pass-thru volumes without the complexities of configuring RAID or data redundancy.
  • Integration with QuantaStor: Pass-thru storage volumes created using this feature are seamlessly integrated with QuantaStor's management capabilities. You can monitor the health and status of the individual drives, perform maintenance tasks, and incorporate them into your overall storage management within the QuantaStor interface.
  • It's important to note that pass-thru storage volumes lack data redundancy, which means that data stored on individual drives is not protected against drive failures. Therefore, it's crucial to consider the trade-off between performance and data redundancy when deciding to use pass-thru storage volumes.

Overall, the "Create Pass-thru Storage Volume(s)" feature in QuantaStor allows you to create individual storage volumes that map directly to physical drives without any additional data protection mechanisms. It provides direct drive access, flexibility, performance optimization, simplified management, and integration within the QuantaStor storage management system.
